The history of the Farnham Maltings, Bridge Square, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 7QR

The story of The Maltings at Farnham in Surrey is a remarkable one. The Maltings exists and is what it is today because of the dedication and determination of local people and is the only completely independent arts centre of its kind, still run by its own Council of Management. The buildings were described by Nigel Temple in his book Farnham Buildings and People, as “austere and rather formidable, they are virile, functional and bold.”

The buildings over the years have been used since 1729, (or quite possibly earlier) as a tannery, a brewery and then a maltings, and now as a vibrant arts and community centre hosting a huge variety of events and activities.
