Disorder by McDermott's 2 Hours v Levellers
Disorder |
After the very well received ‘Claws and Wings’ album, Nick Burbridge and the
reformed McDermott’s 2 Hours (guitarist Matt Goorney and fiddle player Ben
Paley) join up again with Levellers Jeremy Cunningham on bass and Charlie
Heather on percussion. Together they have produced one of the finest musical
collections that I have heard this year. As with the previous album the collective gives the fantastic Burbridge lyrics a solid platform to do there work. Rousing, politically scathing words put to music that you can’t help but sit up and take notice of. Burbridge the poet is never shy to say what needs to be said. Burbridge the musician takes those words and conjures up incredibly catchy tunes for which to put them to. The instrumentation makes a real contribution to the overall feel of the record also. The music is both subtle and in your face in equal measure and never does more or less than the particular song requires. Ben Paley’s fiddle is reel-driven and complements Burbridge and Goorney’s guitars superbly. Cunningham and Heather as the rhythm section bring the solidarity to many of the songs that is evident in their work with the Levellers, and along with a host of guests playing a whole range of complementary instruments all together a quality combination. To choose a stand out track would be difficult as all the songs do themselves justice and sit perfectly in the mix of the record. If pushed my favorite would probably be Black Sun (In Genoa) due to it’s consistently smart lyrics and fantastic fiddle hook, marching snare drum, accordion opening and whistle, it absolutely motors! Everything about it is spot on, and that goes for the whole album. At just about bang on one hour it never outstays it’s welcome and is one of those releases you just instantly like, and will look forward to playing. Time is called at the very end of the record, and you know when that happens you’ll be back to enjoy another visit to this, time and again. |
