The Reason
By
Landermason

Multi instrumentalist and vocalist Fiona Lander has teamed with Paul Mason, guitarist extraordinaire in this their third CD performing as Landermason. Their songwriting talents are showcased in carefully crafted arrangements featuring Fiona’s skills on sax, clarinet, recorder and whistles and Paul’s on guitar, bass and bouzouki, with both of them adding distinctive vocals.

The opening track “I know there’s a reason” sets the scene for an album distinguished by beautiful arrangements in which various instruments interweave in the background setting the melodies in context. Songs styles range from enigmatic, wistful melodies to contemporary folk where Fiona’s wonderful saxophone playing adds pure magic!

“When the boat comes in/Dance to your daddy” fuses the traditional songs into laid back jazz with cool vibes on the fiddle added by Peter Tickell. “Words Unsaid” is a clever, bluesy number and one of my favourites of the album; I just love the ending with the sax and guitar. “Me Too” by Mike Naylor begins with soulful sax over solo guitar setting the mood for a song of longing. “Please Yourself” and “Somalia” gives Paul opportunity to shine with his superb technical wizardry on guitar never dominating the song but ever providing a perfect accompaniment. “All roads” is a gentle, life affirming song which evolves into cool jazz to finish. Don’t miss a stunning bonus track, a perfect late night listening chill!

The whole album is a delight, from the distinctive CD cover artwork of Northumbrian images to the crisp, quality of its production and range of material. Fiona and Paul are highly talented musicians who can turn their hand to a wide variety of instruments and styles and between them Landermason have created a fascinating and compelling album, just one Reason why you should listen to it!
